No nests this morning just 4 NNC, 3 in zone 2 and one in zone 3. The one in zone 3 had a damaged rear flipper (see photo) but she dug two egg chambers without dropping any eggs. Tuesday found and secured 7 nests, today was 6. One of the nests in Zone 2, which needed relocating, contained 140 eggs! The Data Czar is going to have a field day with these numbers. It was a seven nest day on Tuesday! It is quite a site to walk the beach and see so many protected nests...175! Every single nest safely identified and marked represents roughly 100-130 eggs protected from predators, foot traffic, and high tides. In a world where only about 1 in 1,000 hatchings survives to adulthood, a seven-next day significantly tilts the odds in their favor. Wow - the adverbs/adjectives can't describe the 2026 sea turtle nesting season on Hunting island. We are averaging 3 viable nests per day and today was no exception. A cooler, clear morning with little wind - it was lovely day to patrol. With nest #145 in Zone 2, #146 in Zone 4 (another Boneyard nest!) and Nest #147 in Zone 5 on Little Hunting - our numbers keep crawling (pun intended) upwards.
