Over the years, Friends of Hunting Island has supported the park in innumerable ways—from small projects like fire extinguishers to large ones like the renovation of the Visitor Center.

 

  • Nature Center renovation of retail and classroom exhibit space

  • Playground at Lighthouse complex

  • Primitive tent sites - 25 ocean view pads with picnic table and firepit

  • Campground check-in station

  • Mobi mats

  • Nature Center gardens and avian garden maintenance

  • Webcam

  • Beach wheelchairs

  • Barrier vegetation for primitive tent site privacy

  • Campground laundromat

  • Virtual Lighthouse - Visitor Center

  • Nature Center classroom extension and other improvements

  • Water garden at the Nature Center

  • ADA equipment including Mobi-mats, beach-accessible wheel chairs, and concrete pads to extend ADA campsites

  • Lighthouse compound restoration and maintenance

  • Civilian Conservation Corps at Hunting Island displays

  • Trail development, improvement, and maintenance

  • Litter control including doggie poop bags and mobile ashtrays

  • Campground play area construction

  • Ecological signage about turtles, nesting birds, etc.

  • Marsh boardwalk improvements

  • Landscaping, sand-fencing, and dune restoration

  • Beach shower towers and changing stations

  • Beach access improvements

  • Educational program support such as Discover Carolina, Women’s Coastal Skills Training, and the People’s Park Project which brings underserved families to the park. 

  • Visitor Center renovation
