It was an exciting morning on the beach ! ~ THREE nests, THREE non nesting crawls,
AND TWO TURTLE MOMMAS ON THE BEACH !
Loggerhead Momma Sea Turtle Facts:
Females reach sexual maturity around 17-33 years, then begin nesting!
They nest every 2-4 years, returning to the same beach where they were born. (called natal homing) Clutch size average 100-120 eggs, with 3-6 clutches per season, spaced about 12-15 days apart.
Eggs incubate for 50-60 days. Nest temperature determines hatchling sex. Above 84* F produces females, below favors males. (Cool Dudes, Hot Chics)
If you see a nesting Momma on the beach please follow these guidelines to ensure her safety and the success of her nesting:
KEEP YOUR DISTANCE: (nesting turtles are easily stressed and disturbances may cause her to abandon the nest)
DO NOT USE LIGHTS: Avoid flashlights, phone screens, or camera flashes. Bright lights can disorient or scare her.
DON'T TOUCH OR APPROACH: Never touch the turtle or her eggs, as this can harm her or the nest. Its also illegal to harass sea turtles. Observe from afar.
KEEP THE BEACH CLEAN - remove any trash, chairs, or obstacles that could impede her movement or affect the nest site. This will ensure she has a clear route to and from the ocean.
If you see a Turtle or a nest being disturbed by people or predators report it !
Sea you on the beach! ~
