Sea Turtle Nest Inventory On Tuesday 8/27 at 7pm

Tuesday, August 27th at 7:00 pm on North Beach Nest 113 - Located in front of the Lighthouse High Tide will be at 6:07 pm

If severe weather conditions are expected on Hunting Island during the time stated above, a cancellation notice will be sent out by 4 pm on the day of the inventory.

A nest inventory is conducted 72 hours after a nest has hatched, in order to determine the success of the nest.  The nest is excavated and all contents are removed and documented.  Occasionally live hatchlings are found in the nest and released, so this is a good opportunity to possibly see live loggerhead hatchlings, although there is no guarantee.

If you are a FOHI Sea Turtle Conservation Project Volunteer, please wear your orange volunteer shirt and badge, so that you can help with crowd management.

This inventory is open to the public, so feel free to post to social media or share; just remember that everyone is responsible for their own admission to the park. FOHI members and guests are covered by their membership

2021 Sea Turtle Project Update

The registration for the 2021 Sea Turtle Conservation Project is on hold until the Department of Natural Resources provides Covid guidelines to all South Carolina nesting projects.

Last Nest of this Season!

The last nest of the season has hatched. This morning Buddy and I checked it out. There were not that many tracks. Perhaps more came out earlier, but the wind blew away the evidence. More may come

A bald eagle was spotted in Zone 4

Just happened to look up and saw the eagle on the top branch of a dead tree. Since there were very few nests to check, it was a surprise to catch a look. Hope it is here to stay.
