Results of the 4th ANNUAL
SAND SCULPTURE CONTEST
Hunting Island State Park Lighthouse Beach

Saturday, July 30, 2011, on the beach at Hunting Island State Park in front of the Lighthouse.
The contest this year was a great success; estimated at 115 participants and 100 spectators. We had 29 grids (up from 24 last year) with multiple people in each grid. Participants came from Beaufort, Fripp, Hilton Head, Charleston, Savannah, Aiken, Nashville, Augusta, Jacksonville, FL, Louisiana, Richmond, VA., Greenville, SC, and Pennsylvania. People from out of State were either campers at the Park or renting on Fripp or HH.
The Saturday following Water Festival seemed to be a good date. Registration was from 12:30–1:00 PM, with people continuing to join later. Sand sculpture building commenced at 1:00 finishing up about 3:00 PM. Judging began just after 3:00, with awards at 3:30.
Deanna Bowdish of The Gallery and President of Beaufort Arts Council was once again our lead judge. This was her fourth year. Deanna brought JW and Jenny Rone, Executive Director and Development Director for the Arts Council of Beaufort to be additional judges. They did a very thorough and professional job that required creativity and flexibility in the judging. The judges awarded ribbons for first and second place in each category. Following the photo shoot of all winners were asked to place their ribbons on their sculpture so that all could see who won. This was a request from spectators last year. We also passed out Certificates for 1st and 2nd as well as coloring books for the kids. Our Best In Show received a $25.00 gift certificate to Boondocks Restaurant, who are always very supportive of FOHI.
Each contestant received a button with the Great Sand Sculpture Contest logo which includes the FOHI Logo. Also we passed out a package including literature which the Nature Center put together for us. It included an Animal Tracks Guide, a Shell Guide, and the Ranger Quest Activity Book. The kids as well as the adults really enjoyed these.

Time: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
- Noon/Register at the Beach 3:30/Award presentations

Tools Permitted: Hand and sculpting tools including: buckets, shovels, sand scoops, carving tools, putty knives, spray bottles for water, kitchen utensils, scrapers, strainers rakes, etc.

Materials: Use only natural materials found on or near the beach. Decorations such as shells, reeds, and small rocks may be used. No artificial decorations or materials are permitted (exception: category #5 below).

Categories:

1) Sand Fleas (up to 8 years old – Must have an adult as a leader)
2) Sand Hoppers (ages 9 –15)
3) Sand Tribes (families)
4) Sand Shapers (adult or small team of adults)
5) Sand Fantasies – (only families with children age 7 and under) Multi-media presentation – artificial decorations or materials permitted –dolls or action figures plus small accessories.
