The 7th Annual Pelican Plunge - January 1, 2015

Attend one of our biggest events and join in the fun activites!

Come out and join the park and the Friends of Hunting Island for the annual jump into the ocean on New Year's Day! This fun and popular event helps raise funds for the park's Discover Carolina education program, which is an initiative within the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism that fuses the park's resources with state curriculum standards and provides students with a unique and memorable learning experience.

The event has become quite a New Year's spectacle. Not only is there the plunge, but you should see the costumes! Once the plungers come out of the water and warm up by the chimenea fires and with hot beverages, there is a costume parade,"Simon Says" and Kazoo songs and other activities to spark the interest of all! Each year, the event gets bigger and the costumes more outrageous. And the funds go to help a very special program. Won't you join us this year?

Watch this page for more information coming soon!

Please join FOHI for its annual meeting on Saturday, December 6 at the Hunting Island State Park Visitor Center. We'll trim the Visitor Center tree at 10 am and the meeting will begin at 11. This is a great opportunity to learn more about and be a part of the exciting work being done on Hunting Island. Coffee, juice, and light breakfast fare will be served.

Discover Carolina provides students in the lowcountry an opportunity to study their local natural resources in a non-traditional environment while improving upon their academic skills. Local students are fortunate to transform Hunting Island into their own classroom.

Teaching Marine and Barrier Island Ecology to children who have never even seen the beach is a difficult job.. We have the unique opportunity to show them in a living classroom and provides an educational experience that that could never be achieved in a traditional classroom. After their unique classroom" experiences, students will leave with a new awareness for Marine Ecology or the wonders about life on a Barrier Island. Some students will spend their time investigating the survival of Loggerhead Turtles. ... More....
